For over three decades, the Pathways workbook has been a favorite resource for clinicians working with teens with sexual behavior problems.

The new fifth edition has been revised from cover to cover to make the workbook even more relevant for youths with problematic sexual behaviors, including those who have engaged in non-consensual sexual contact with peers as well as youths who have been viewing child sexual abuse materials (CSAM). Pathways, Fifth Edition, provides updated technology references while maintaining the familiar chapter organization. There is less focus on arousal conditioning methods and increased focus on building resilience and positive life experiences.

New and updated assignments focus on healthy sexuality, establishing healthy boundaries, yes-means-yes consent, and communication in sexual relationships. Numerous assignments have been revised to address the treatment needs of youths who have been viewing CSAM.

The Healthy Living Project (HLP) and its emphasis on building client honesty, responsibil­ity, sensitivity, and integrity, is now a prominent feature of every chapter. Understanding that today’s teen clients have grown up in the digital age, the 5th Edition includes instructions for building the HLP using a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation in lieu of a paper scrapbook. To that end, Timothy Kahn has developed a PowerPoint template for the Healthy Living Project that allows clinicians and clients to collaborate on producing this culminating treatment assignment.

Pathways Fifth Edition is not a treatment program in and of itself. Pathways is a tool that is designed to serve as one component of an overall treatment program for adolescents with sexual behavior problems. The stories and exercises in Pathways are designed to complement individual, group, and family therapy.

Healthy Families

Healthy Families is a companion book for parents that is designed to complement the Pathways workbook. Current research indicates that parental involvement makes a valuable contribution to the successful treatment of children with sexual behavior problems. The book gives parents the knowledge they need to make positive, informed, and healthy decisions as their children proceed through the treatment process in any type of outpatient or residential treatment program.
