Online Training Description:

Research shows that 30-50 percent of adolescent males who have exhibited harmful sexual behavior (HSB) have ADHD. The core traits of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)—such as impulsivity, inattention, emotional dysregulation, and executive functioning deficits—can significantly contribute to the risk of engaging in further harmful behaviors. However, when understood and managed appropriately, ADHD can also foster strengths that contribute to recovery and future success. Therefore, the implementation of effective interventions is essential.

Jonny Matthew, a social worker and criminologist with more than 30 years of experience, developed this training to provide professionals with the skills to recognize and address ADHD in adolescents, specifically those involved in HSB. Drawing from his own experiences with ADHD, Matthew offers insights that help practitioners support these young people in ways that reduce risk, promote recovery, and foster long-term well-being.

In this training, Jonny underlines the necessity of trauma-informed approaches and explores methods for making treatment more effective, such as compassionate engagement and creating a safe environment. He also describes how medication, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy can be tailored to meet the needs of these youths.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

1) Describe ADHD and its subtypes
2) Describe difficulties individuals often experience in coming to terms with an ADHD diagnosis
3) Explain ADHD's impact on adolescents in general with a particular focus on those displaying harmful sexual behavior.
4) Identify the overlapping of symptoms of ADHD and triggers for HSB that complicates treatment.
5) Utilize practical, compassionate strategies and treatment approaches for ADHD in adolescents displaying HSB.

Attendees are invited to join an open discussion 15 minutes following the end of the training, where you can engage with fellow attendees by turning on your camera and microphone. This is an opportunity to share your experiences and contribute to a meaningful exchange of ideas. Time will be allocated to address questions or insights from the training. Please note that attendance is optional and will not affect your eligibility for a training certificate.
