Training Description

Many clients receiving counseling or social services have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and other traumas. Trauma experiences can influence a person’s thinking, emotions, behavior, and sense of identity. These can, in turn, contribute to the emergence of behavioral patterns that result in harm to self and others. Further, systemic racism, economic disparities, and mass incarceration also serve as both the causes and consequences of trauma, often rooted in a long history of implicit bias.

This workshop first explores the concepts of trauma and adversity (including cultural and historical trauma) and their legacy for clients and communities. We will then summarize SAMHSA’s principles and components of trauma-informed care (TIC).

Using TIC principles, this interactive workshop will focus on two main skill sets:
(1) case conceptualization through the trauma lens, and
(2) trauma-informed responding to clients.

The workshop then includes a panel discussion (with Tyffani Dent and Alejandro Leguizamo) specifically focusing on aspects of cultural trauma.  The presenters will invite opportunities for participants to share their own case challenges and to refine their TIC skills. Through trauma-informed practices, we can improve delivery of rehabilitative services by recognizing that presenting problems are sometimes rooted in inter-generational trauma.
