Adolescents with intellectual disabilities who exhibit problematic sexual behaviors represent a diverse group. Their cognitive and neurodevelopmental challenges are reflected in a wide array of social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral impairments that frequently combine with comorbid psychiatric conditions. While the specific research on effectively assessing and treating intellectually disabled youths exhibiting problematic sexual behavior remains sparse, incorporating approaches from outside the field of treating problematic sexual behaviors can serve to improve our effectiveness. It can also broaden our understanding of the challenges these adolescents may face in various treatment interventions.

This workshop focuses on the overarching principles associated with the effective assessment and treatment of intellectually disabled youths exhibiting problematic sexual behaviors while identifying specific treatment needs and treatment interventions for some of the different constellations of social, emotional, and cognitive difficulties that may be presented by these youths.

As a result of participating in this training, attendees will be better able to:

1) Identify key concerns and adaptations to consider in assessing intellectually disabled adolescents.
2) Describe core concepts for treating children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities.
3) Apply treatment interventions for adolescents who present with different types of learning disabilities.
4) Identify options and resources necessary for facilitating healthy sexual development and positive sexual behaviors for children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities.
5) Demonstrate strategies to address psychiatric comorbidity.

This training is for professionals who work with adolescents with intellectual disabilities who exhibit problematic sexual behaviors. This includes psychologists, social workers, counselors, and behavior analysts.
