Professional helpers sometimes forget to help themselves! This two-hour training describes how they can build their own resilience in these stressful and uncertain times.
Participants learn about vicarious and secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, moral injury, and burnout. Using principles of trauma-informed care (trust and safety, choice, collaboration, empowerment, peer support, cultural and gender relevance), participants discover strategies for self-care, relaxation, personal exploration, and professional development.
Topics discussed include:
1) Wounded healers: How might trauma impact a staff member’s work with clients? How might it affect their relationship to their supervision and the supervision process?
2) Creating a trauma-informed work environment: Taking care of our own! Introduction to parallel processes 3) Working with diversity
4) Occupational Hazards
5) Vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and moral injury
6) Developing and implementing a self-care plan
1) Describe their own work-related stressors through a trauma lens.
2) Describe specific work-related responses to stress, including vicarious and secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, moral injury, and burnout.
3) Explain how parallel processes between practitioners and clients can manifest in trauma-informed care.
4) Implement their own resilience and self-care plan.
Audience
This training is for professionals working with people who have experienced complex trauma as well as people who have perpetrated abuse. Professionals who will benefit from this training include social workers, psychologists, clinical counselors, and interested paraprofessionals.

Dr. Jill Levenson, PhD, LCSW, is a renowned expert in Trauma-informed Care and a Professor at Barry University in Miami. She is a certified TIC instructor, specializing in applying TIC in various settings. Dr. Levenson’s extensive work includes over 120 articles, 25 chapters, and 6 books. Her research has been funded by prestigious organizations like NIJ, NSVRC, and CDC. Recognized for her contributions, she has received awards such as the Social Worker of the Year Award from NASW-FL and a Lifetime Achievement Award from ATSA. Dr. Levenson is also a member of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare. She has conducted trainings globally and advocates for social justice and trauma-informed care.
