In 2022, Miranda Galbreath posted a brief video intended for her friends and close colleagues. In it, she described her professional work with people who choose not to act on their sexual interest in children. An influential group with a well-noted political agenda took a brief section of the video out of context and reposted it widely on social media. Within days, she was publicly criticized over 72,000 times, including by a US Senator.

As her situation grew worse, Miranda became stronger. While many others would have simply left the field, she viewed this as an opportunity to deepen her personal and professional understanding of the lived experiences of people in targeted communities. As a result, she has a deeper appreciation for targeted communities and a broader network of colleagues, advocates, clients, and organizations.

In this webinar, Miranda describes her efforts at self-care and resiliency, both personally and professionally. She also offers ideas and resources for clinicians seeking to keep themselves and their clients safe as they work to build safer lives and healthier communities.

Miranda’s story illustrates how the work of preventing child abuse is vital for public health, while misinformed public shaming helps no one.
