Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with adult criminality, including violent and sexual offending. Men and women who have sexually offended have significantly higher ACE scores than the general population. However, until recently, the trauma of the client was rarely addressed in sex-offending treatment models. Trauma can contribute to relational and self-regulation deficits. It is therefore unsurprising that older offense-specific models of treatment for sexual offending have produced mixed results.
Trauma-informed care (TIC) is a person-centered model focusing on elevating client social functioning by responding to harmful and otherwise maladaptive behavior in the context of traumatic experiences. TIC is grounded in research revealing evidence of the pervasive and enduring nature of ACEs and the neuroscience of trauma.
This 6 CE credit hour training provides an overview of the principles of trauma-informed care, the prevalence and correlates of early adversity, the role of trauma in the development of behavioral and relational problems, clinical strategies for collaborative, strengths-based assessments, and trauma-informed counseling interventions. It includes a specific focus on the challenges of incorporating TIC in prisons and special commitment centers and programs.
Topics to be covered include:
1) Simple versus complex trauma
2) Trauma-informed assessment
3) Special challenges to implementation in high-security settings
4) How early adversity contributes to dynamic risk factors
5) Incorporating TIC principles into SOTX programming
As a result of this training, participants will be better able to:
1) Explain the components of trauma-informed care.
2) Describe complex trauma and its contribution to illegal behaviors.
3) Describe common adverse experiences in the backgrounds of clients in high-security settings.
4) Use strategies for improving assessments and treatment responsivity with clients who have experienced trauma and adversity.
5) Apply trauma-informed skills to engage these clients meaningfully in treatment.
6) Integrate trauma-responsive concepts into program content and therapeutic process.
