Evaluating individuals at risk for violent or abusive behavior is among the most important and challenging tasks faced by professionals working in assessment and treatment. Yet many evaluators find themselves doing this work in isolation, without opportunities to connect, share experience, or seek perspectives from others in the field.

These Our Safe Haven sessions, co-moderated by Laurie Guidry and David Prescott, provide just that: a collegial, café-style gathering space where practitioners can come together for open, supportive conversations. Each session begins with a focused review of the complexities of conducting assessments with individuals who have harmed others, evolving naturally into an engaging, attendee-driven conversation shaped by shared experiences and professional insights:
- Session 01: Let’s Talk About the Purpose of Assessment
March 5, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm ET
Explore how referral questions, legal mandates, and agency expectations shape the focus, scope, and tone of evaluations. How do these factors influence the recommendations we make to treatment programs? - Session 02: Let’s Talk What We Ask and How We Listen
March 25, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm ET
Reflect on interview strategies for clinical reviews, including ways to invite openness and respond to denial and minimization. Discuss the difficulties of making space for the person’s story, trauma, culture, and context while still gathering information about risk and protective factors. - Session 03: Let’s Talk Writing About Risk in Human Terms
April 24, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm ET
Discuss the challenges of translating complex assessment data into clear language that communicates risk, uncertainty, and potential for change to courts, agencies, clients, and families without reducing people to their worst actions.
These sessions are more than a discussion—they are opportunities to network, build skills, exchange ideas, and contribute to shaping best practices in mental health care. Join us to connect with like-minded professionals, gain actionable insights, and contribute meaningfully to improving outcomes for both clients and providers in our communities.
To ensure that each session is workable, we will limit the number of attendees. Registration for each session will, therefore, be on a first-come-first-served basis. We are charging a non-refundable fee of $8.00 to reserve your spot.
Your personal privacy is our highest priority. These sessions will be recorded for liability purposes only. The recordings will not be shared with attendees or distributed outside of Safer Society Foundation.
Like any group discussion, everyone will have a responsibility to keep it a safe, professional, and confidential space. We will adhere to the codes of ethics of our professions, mandatory laws, and other professional standards. The Safe Haven series is intended to be supportive; not formal supervision, consultation, or legal advice.
