It is well known that being able to demonstrate empathic, compassionate understanding of clients results in better treatment outcomes. This mini course, also available as individual modules, is for practitioners looking to enhance their approach with clients who:

  • Express ambivalence towards change
  • Struggle with feelings of shame
  • Feel deep shame and doubt about the future

Author and practitioner Stephen Andrew is among the most accomplished and sought-after motivational interviewing (MI) trainers in the world. Additionally, he has spent many years in private practice, treating men with histories of violence, trauma, and substance use disorders. As a result of his experiences, Stephen’s training and practice focus on developing a deep mastery of skills related to listening, demonstrating empathy, and having compassion for clients, even under the most difficult of circumstances.

This mini course takes a deep dive into the heart of compassionate communication. Although this mini course involves the use of MI skills, it is not an MI training and does not require past training in that area. Skills that are highlighted include:

  • Setting intentions for each session
  • Working from the heart as well as the intellect
  • Receiving responses nonverbally as well as verbally
  • Staying attuned to clients
  • Understanding “the trauma whisper” in self-talk
  • Seeking the felt sense behind client statements and conveying it verbally
  • Being responsible for the intervention but not the outcome
  • Using “gentle guesses” to clarify the intentions behind a statement
  • Differentiating empathy and compassion from sympathy
  • Building awareness of “power-over” thinking
  • Addressing client hopes, dreams, and needs for validation
  • Exploring and resolving ambivalence about making changes
  • Skillfully using the repeating of client’s statements to move closer to accurate empathy
  • Using reflective statements to deepen conversations
  • Rejecting the urge to feel that one is “right,” which can destroy a conversation (and even a relationship)
  • Meeting people where they dream, not just where they’re at
