The term anime generally refers to animated television shows, films, and online shorts, particularly those originating in Japan. Its influence extends across digital media, including adult content. Hentai, a category of sexually explicit anime and manga, is one example of this overlap.

Anime’s popularity raises important questions about how young people engage with its themes and visual styles, including portrayals of sexuality and relationships. Understanding this engagement can help inform conversations about sexual health, consent, and media literacy while recognizing the wide range of anime content and adolescents’ experiences with it.
Developed by Jermaine Wall, a clinician with expertise in anime who treats adolescents who have sexually abused others, this training explores anime’s cultural influence and its relevance to clinical practice. It focuses on adolescents who have engaged in sexually abusive behavior while offering insights for parents, educators, and mental health professionals who work with youth. In this training, he describes:
- Anime’s cultural influence and role in shaping young minds and perceptions, especially in terms of themes related to sexual behavior and relationships.
- The evolution of media consumption, including how adolescents engage differently with media than in the past.
- Clinical implications of anime’s cultural differences, including its roots in Japan’s cultural and legal landscape.
- Clinical implications of youth engagement with anime content, including how parents, educators, and mental health professionals can talk openly about anime with youth.
Anime’s portrayal of relationships and sexual content can range from innocent to explicit. This training offers a unique look into how adolescents might interpret their own experiences and understandings of consent, relationships, and personal boundaries.
Interactive Follow-Up Meeting
Attendees are invited to join an open discussion 15 minutes following the end of the training, where you can engage with fellow attendees by turning on your camera and microphone. This is an opportunity to share your experiences and contribute to a meaningful exchange of ideas. Time will be allocated to address questions or insights from the training. Please note that attendance is optional and will not affect your eligibility for a training certificate.
As a result of participating in this training, attendees will be better able to:
1) Describe anime’s current influence in online sexual content
2) Explain how anime can influence adolescents’ perceptions of sexuality and sexual behavior
3) Outline clinical implications of anime use by adolescents who have sexually abused
