Compassion, Research, and “Wilsonisms”: Celebrating Dr. Robin Wilson’s 40 Years in the Field
This webinar is for professionals and researchers in the field of sexual violence prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. It will especially appeal to those interested in the historical development of the field, current practices, and future directions in addressing sexual violence.
On August 4th, 1984, a young Robin Wilson went to work with sexologist Kurt Freund, one of the early practitioners in the field of understanding, evaluating, and treating sexual violence – and the developer of the penile plethysmograph.
Four decades later, Dr. Wilson reflects on a career marked by significant achievements. One of the first researchers to study restorative justice-based approaches to preventing sexual violence, Dr. Wilson has been a steadfast advocate of Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA), an innovative approach to reducing recidivism. His efforts have led to the creation of comprehensive documentation on the effectiveness of CoSAs, and he has trained practitioners in their implementation throughout North America and beyond. His influence persists in the many countries where CoSAs have been established.
Dr. Wilson has had a distinguished career in both Canada and the United States as a registered and board-certified clinician. He has worked as a private practitioner conducting evaluations and served as the clinical director of the Florida Civil Commitment Center and a Chief Psychologist with Corrections Canada. Dr. Wilson also holds the position of adjunct clinical professor at McMaster University in Ontario.
Dr. Wilson is known for having trained more Static-99R trainers than any other individual and is one of the world’s few experts on working with people convicted of sex crimes who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. Those who have attended his presentations often commend his engaging sense of humor, which has led to the creation of what are affectionately termed, “Wilsonisms.”
In this webinar, host David Prescott joins Dr. Wilson to reflect on his remarkable 40-year career and explore the field’s current state and where the future might lead. Join us in honoring Dr. Wilson’s dedication to advancing our understanding of sexual violence. His work has significantly enhanced our knowledge, the creation of safer communities, and the development of more effective rehabilitation strategies around the world.
