It will probably come as no surprise that recent studies and reports from practitioners have revealed that the prevalence of exposure to pornography among adolescents is on the rise, more so than ever before. From online “tube sites” to the ever-evolving realm of social media, the long-term implications of exposure to sexually explicit media remain unknown.

During this training, David Prescott and Seth Wescott explore the realities of pornography use by adolescents and discuss the clinical implications. They describe the proliferation of explicit content and how, in many cases, it has become more concerning.

The presenters offer strategies and ideas for working with young people who struggle with pornography exposure. By fostering a deeper understanding of the role of pornography in the lives of adolescents, this training empowers attendees to navigate this challenging area and better support their clients.

Strategies and ideas discussed include:

    • Deciding between limiting screen time versus encouraging its best use.
    • Balancing the short-term versus long-term needs of adolescents.
    • Talking with adolescents and young adults about sexually explicit media that depict violence, lack of consent, and gender and racial stereotypes.
    • Discussing with young people considerations regarding informed consent, such as consenting to conversations but not to “sexting.”
    • Helping young people discover healthy uses of social media.

While clear answers remain in short supply, the presenters offer valuable insights into how to help adolescents move forward with their lives. This training is designed to support all youths but also places an emphasis on those whose sexual behaviors have caused harm to others.

As a result of participating in this training, attendees will be better able to:

1) Describe the prevalence and concerning trends of adolescent exposure to pornography, especially through social media and lesser-known apps.
2) Explain the “Savvy Consumer” model of addressing pornography use by adolescents.
3) Construct treatment plans on consent, pornography use, sexting, and healthy sexuality.

Audience

This training is for a wide range of professionals and caregivers who work with and support adolescents, with the goal of equipping them to navigate the complex issue of pornography exposure among youths.
