Although human trafficking has been a recognized international issue for many years, it is only recently that domestic sex trafficking has been recognized as a serious problem within the United States. While often legally defined under pimping and/or pandering statutes at the state level, this form of exploitation has gained increased attention from professionals in the field. Despite a growing body of literature on international sex trafficking, very little is known about those who profit from street-level domestic sex trafficking within the United States, commonly referred to as “pimps” or “sex traffickers” in legal contexts.

At this stage in the evolution of our field, it is crucial that professionals develop a comprehensive understanding of:

  • General human trafficking dynamics: Including its various forms, prevalence, and global impact.
  • Domestic sex trafficking specifics: Recognizing the unique characteristics and challenges presented by this form of exploitation within the United States.
  • Risk-relevant factors: Identifying the treatment and supervision needs specific to those who have perpetrated domestic sex trafficking.

Across her 24-year career, presenter Katie Gotch has researched, assessed, and treated numerous men convicted of crimes related to sex trafficking. Katie developed this training to provide information on domestic and international human trafficking, with a focus on the perpetration of sex trafficking, followed by an overview of the current research related to perpetrators of domestic sex trafficking in the United States.

During the training, Katie discusses:

  • How human trafficking intersects with other sexual offending
  • Gaps in the available research
  • The importance of understanding psychopathy and related constructs
  • Effective practice (with case examples)
  • The role of systemic racism and oppression
  • Evidence-informed and individualized approaches

The session also provides practical guidance and strategies for the assessment, treatment, management, and supervision of those who perpetrate domestic sex trafficking.

As a result of participating in this training, attendees will be better able to:

1) Summarize federal and state definitions of human trafficking.
2) Identify three elements of trafficking.
3) Describe common indicators that an individual has been trafficked, including risk factors that predispose an individual to become involved in trafficking.
4) Identify the psychological characteristics and criminogenic risk/need factors of perpetrators of domestic sex trafficking.
5) Plan and implement strategies for the appropriate assessment, treatment and management of perpetrators of domestic sex trafficking.

This training is primarily for professionals who work directly with adults who have perpetrated domestic sex trafficking. This includes social workers, psychologists, mental health professionals, and therapists. Law enforcement officers, probation and parole officers, researchers, and academics in the field of criminology will also benefit from this training.
