Online Training Description:

Awareness and recognition of human trafficking crimes within the United States have increased in recent years, with sex and labor trafficking being the most common forms. Sex trafficking is often legally defined under pimping and/or pandering statutes at the state level, and, due to this, individuals convicted of sex trafficking crimes are often classified as “sexual offenders” and required to comply with policies and management strategies related to that label (e.g., registration, sexual offense specific treatment).

However, little is actually known about the developmental trajectory, psychological characteristics, or criminogenic risk/need factors of this population. Katie Gotch developed this training to provide:

•  An overview of human trafficking and the elements of trafficking.
• A comprehensive overview of the current research and practical knowledge about adult men convicted of sex trafficking crimes in the United States.
• Guidance and strategies for assessing, treating, and managing of adult men involved in domestic sex trafficking.

Ms. Gotch also reviews relevant topics such as the cultural/historical context of sex trafficking, psychopathy, and emphasizes trauma-informed approaches in assessment, treatment, and supervision.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this training, attendees will be better able to:

1) Identify federal and state definitions of human trafficking, as well as three elements of trafficking.
2) Explain psychological characteristics and criminogenic risk/need factors of adult men convicted of domestic sex trafficking crimes.
3) Explain why adult men convicted of domestic sex trafficking are a unique justice-involved population requiring specialized supervision and therapeutic interventions.
4) Apply strategies for assessing, treating, and supervising adult men involved in domestic sex trafficking
